Lap time, average speed and race distance
Lap Time Calculator
Enter the track length and either your average speed or your lap time, and get the other along with total time for a stint or race. Works in miles or kilometres and mph or km/h.
- Average speed
- 144.8 km/h
- Total for 10 laps
- 16:40.00 sec
- Track length
- 4.023 km
- Speed
- 132.0 ft/s
The lap time formula
Lap time is distance divided by average speed: t = d ÷ v. A 2.5-mile track at an average of 90 mph takes 1:40.00. Reverse it to get v = d ÷ t when you already have a lap time.
Average speed for common lap times (2.5 mi track)
| Lap time | Average speed (mph) | km/h |
|---|---|---|
| 1:30 | 100.0 | 160.9 |
| 1:40 | 90.0 | 144.8 |
| 1:50 | 81.8 | 131.7 |
| 2:00 | 75.0 | 120.7 |
| 2:10 | 69.2 | 111.4 |
Using it for race planning
Multiply the lap time by the number of laps for total race time, which is handy for stint and fuel planning. Remember that the average includes slow corners, so it is far below your top speed. For drag racing use the dragstrip calculator.
Frequently asked questions
